《第七子》根据英国作家约瑟夫·德拉尼创作的青少年黑暗奇幻系列小说《沃德斯通编年史》第一卷《幽灵学徒》改编；故事背景设定在遥远的过去，在被幽灵格雷戈里（杰夫·布里吉斯饰）羁押多个世纪后，邪恶而强大的女巫马尔金（朱丽安·摩尔饰）成功逃脱，随后便大肆招兵买马，复仇心切的她意欲血洗这个世界。为了抗击马尔金大军，年事已高却难寻接班人的格雷戈里必须在满月到来前，将他最新招募的14岁异能少年汤姆·沃德（本·巴恩斯饰）训练成合格学徒，因为人类唯一的希望就寄托在这名第七子身上。
